"But wait a minute," you say to them. "No one ever asked you to stay up all night eight days a week trying to get filthy rich shorting what's left of the American auto industry or selling $600 billion in toxic, irredeemable mortgages to ex-strippers on work release and Taco Bell clerks. Actually, come to think of it, why are we even giving taxpayer money to you people? Why are we not throwing your ass in jail instead?"

Continuing to lose weight, though it's slowed appreciably. We'll see what happens after today, though, as lunch was a group outing to a local Indian restaurant, and that second trip through the buffet line wasn't really necessary. I did pull down a new pair of jeans from the shelf they were on, and am wearing them now. I'm now able to fit into them -- even if they are slightly tight, I don't need to engage in any major contortions or sucking-in-of-gut to do so.
I'm down about half of what I want to lose, so lets see how good I can continue to be.

At lunch last weekend I overheard someone at another table say that when she wanted a greater caffeine buzz, she chose a different roast. I can't remember whether she chose darker or lighter roast for the greater buzz, but it doesn't matter; both answers were wrong. The effect of coffee roasting on caffeine content is so negligible as to be immeasurable except under tightly controlled laboratory conditions.

Lately I’ve found myself using more and more financial rules of thumb. A rule of thumb is a general guideline, an easy way to approximate a value quickly. It’s not meant to be completely accurate. On a whim this weekend, I gathered together many of the general rules I’ve been using, as well as several others I found online. Thanks to those who follow me on Twitter, who also contributed suggestions.

In a nutshell, Wolfram and his team have built what he calls a “computational knowledge engine” for the Web. OK, so what does that really mean? Basically it means that you can ask it factual questions and it computes answers for you.

Those of us who often write tutorials or course materials for computer applications, often need to show how a dialog box or a menu or something looks on screen. We then do a screenshot.

If your site stores its sensitive data in a MySQL database, you will most definitely want to backup that information so that it can be restored in case of any disaster (we all have been there).

Sorry, but that's drivel. In fact, what we are living through is the worst financial scandal in history. It dwarfs 1929, Ponzi's scheme, Teapot Dome, the South Sea Bubble, tulip bulbs, you name it. Bernie Madoff? He's peanuts. Credit derivatives—those securities that few have ever seen—are one reason why this crisis is so different from 1929.

Sysadmin pocket survival guide for batch/queue
So, I finally broke down and jumped on the scale the other day, just to see how much of the weight I'd lost after a bout with the stomach flu (and, a short while later, having eaten something that disagreed with me) I'd put back on, only to find that while I've not really been exercising or overly good with my diet, I've at least managed to display enough restraint to be down around 20 or so pounds from where I was at my last doctor's appointment at the end of last year.

"The privilege against self-incrimination, a federal court has ruled, does not bar prosecutors from forcing a defendant in a child pornography case to decrypt his laptop hard drive—reversing a 2007 decision that found the demand to enter a password equivalent to compelled testimony." -- I wonder what the rules are if this were a locked safe with pictures/video in it, as opposed to a laptop.
