So, after attempting to upgrade MT to 4.1, and not getting something about this web hosting environment (and so unable to complete the configuration process), I broke down, and added MT to my account.
Relatively cheap, and "just works," though as a system administrator I'm vaguely ashamed I didn't get it done myself.....
